ABOUT THE BOOK
Raven Run is the memoir of a fly fisherman who got off to a late start. In my early 20s I got hooked ass over teakettle when I witnessed a wild rainbow rocket from under a boulder through three feet of clear water to smash my brother’s dry fly. I have been trying to make up for lost time ever since. I learned how to fly fish on rugged North Carolina and Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains trout streams and expanded my horizons with trips out to the famed rivers of the west, where I learned lessons about big trout, trespassing, and the grace of fly fishing. I moved to Pennsylvania in 1989, where I befriended men like Jim Latini and Bob Rinn, who helped connect me to the historical and cultural heritage of the northcentral Pennsylvania region. This book covers my misadventures as well as successes. Sometimes I even fish for other species besides trout, although I buy my catfish fillets shrink wrapped. I write about the ethics of fly fishing, my spiritual connections to nature, and environmental concerns for the future. But I always come back to Raven Run, a familiar yet dynamic local small stream that became my Pennsylvania home waters. Even if you are a novice at fly angling, my hope is that there will be something in these pages that speaks to you.
